Boat inspectors' reports, 1858-1864.

Chicago boat inspector reports were made by canal employees who assisted toll collectors by inspecting all cargoes (either by broading or having crowded boats unloaded) to report any discrepancies with bills of lading or clearances to the toll collector. The reports include inspection date; clearance number; inspected boat name; cargo description (i.e., rye; barley; oats; wheat; flour; salt; corn; cider; groceries; hoops; shingles; flax seed; lumber; stone; earthernware).
